The Booking Process

Yacht Charter Booking Process, From Quote to Charter Day

A walk-through of what happens after you click Book. Five steps from inquiry to disembarkation, plus a what-to-bring checklist for charter day. For specific pricing structure, see the pricing page; for the full FAQ, see charter info.

Step 1

Get a quote.

Three channels, all reaching the same response window. FareHarbor booking widget auto-quotes for standard 2 to 4-hour blocks on available dates, fastest for couples-only and standard bookings on flexible dates. Email info@malarkycharters.com with your date, duration, guest count, and any add-ons; we respond within 1 business hour during operating hours (8am-8pm Pacific). Phone (844) 724-5787 is real-time during operating hours and best for complex inquiries (multiple add-ons, specific date holds, corporate invoicing setup).

What to include in your inquiry to get a tight quote on the first reply: the date or date window, the duration you're targeting, the guest count, the occasion if relevant, and any add-ons (water toys, photographer coordination, catering coordination, corporate invoicing). The more specific your inputs, the more specific our quote.

Step 2

Confirm and deposit.

Your quote arrives as an itemized email with the all-in rate, the deposit amount, what's included, and any optional add-ons listed but not yet committed. To confirm: reply to the email with "let's book it" (or with any adjustments you want to make to the line items), and we send a deposit link. Alternatively, for FareHarbor-quoted standard blocks, you can pay the deposit directly through the booking widget and the date is held immediately.

Deposit handling: secures your date and counts against your final balance. Balance is due either at the time of booking (for short-notice bookings within 2 weeks of charter date) or 7 days before your charter (for bookings made earlier). We send a payment reminder before the balance is due.

For corporate or executive bookings: we accept purchase orders and advance invoicing. Email your PO to info@malarkycharters.com; we return an invoice within 24 business hours. Standard payment terms are net 30 for established accounts.

Step 3

Pre-charter communication.

Once your booking is confirmed, here's what you'll receive in the lead-up to your charter date:

Step 4

Charter day.

Arrival: 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Earlier than that and the boat may not be ready for boarding; later than that compresses your charter time because the captain departs on schedule (charter windows are timed to specific light and anchor positions).

Location: Our dock is at 2700 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego, CA 92106. The paid lot directly across the street has free spaces toward the back, and there's metered parking along Shelter Island Drive. We always recommend using rideshare services like Lyft or Uber to eliminate the need to find parking. Walk down the walkway between Intrepid Boat Works and San Diego Marine Exchange to the water and meet us at the gate to our dock; look for the big Malarky sign above it (not the office).

Boarding: the crew will be on the dock and visible from the parking lot at the 15-minute mark. They greet you, take any catering deliveries, help with any decor you've brought, and welcome you aboard. Total boarding window is typically 10 minutes for couples-only, 15 minutes for larger groups.

Underway: the captain pulls away from the dock on schedule. The crew gives you a brief safety orientation (life vest locations, head locations, where to find the cooler) and then steps back. From that point forward, your charter is yours. The captain handles routing, positioning, and timing; the crew is available when you need them and out of frame when you don't.

If you're running late: call (844) 724-5787 from the road. We'll adjust expectations and, if the delay is reasonable, hold departure briefly. For charter blocks that lock to specific light (sunset charters, proposal charters), running 20+ minutes late may impair the planned timing, call as early as you know.

Step 5

Post-charter.

The captain returns to the slip at the scheduled disembarkation time. The crew assists with any remaining items, helps you off the boat, and points you back to the parking lot. A follow-up email arrives within 24 hours thanking you for the charter and asking for a Google review if you had a good time. We respond to every Google review we receive, which is one of the ways we maintain the 5.0 stars across 412 reviews.

For couples planning future charters, anniversaries on the anniversary date, executive offsites on a recurring quarterly cadence, etc., mention at the end of your charter and we'll add a soft hold for the next likely date. Many of our return bookings are made this way before guests have even left the dock.

What to Bring

Charter day checklist.

  • Food, whatever your group will eat. Easy-to-handle options work best: charcuterie boards, sandwiches, takeout containers, catered spread. Bring trays if you want presentation; we provide trays on request.
  • Drinks (BYOB), cans, plastic containers, or wine/champagne bottles. Pour into the plastic cups we provide; no red wine on deck. Champagne, white wine, rosé, sparkling, beer, spirits, cocktails, non-alcoholic, all welcome.
  • Layers, warm afternoon to cooler post-sunset with breeze. Light jacket for evening charters.
  • Sunscreen, essential even on overcast days; the water reflects UV.
  • Sunglasses, the bay is bright.
  • Towels, especially for water-toy charters or warm-day deck lounging.
  • Soft-soled shoes or barefoot, no black-soled shoes (they scuff the deck).
  • Decor (optional), flowers, banners, candles when wind allows. We provide vases on request.
  • Photographer's gear (if applicable), brief them on framing and positioning during the pre-charter call.

For specific occasion-related items (rings, bridal accessories, milestone decor), bring them with you to the dock; we transfer aboard during boarding. The crew is good at storing items discreetly and producing them at the right moment when the charter has a "reveal" element to it.
